1. We added a pull-out drain plug
Let's start from the ground up. Underneath the work surface, most mud kitchens have just a shelf and a dramatic play oven — ours is no different in that sense, but we added a feature that makes your life as a parent just a bit easier.
While you can opt to leave the sink hardware uninstalled to allow for easy removal, this thing can get heavy and difficult to maneuver. So we added a pull-out drain plug that's snug enough that it won't come out unless you yank on it — and when you do, it comes out fast.
2. The stovetop is flat
Moving on, what's a kitchen without a stove? From a low angle, it looks like we might have skipped this part — it's all flat. We opted to use a screened-on decal instead of a physical part to preserve the work surface and provide flexibility. This isn't just a kitchen, it's whatever your kids want it to be.
And when they’re done playing, you can swipe everything straight into a bin, making clean up super easy.
3. Curves and soft edges
Now this is the most subtle detail, but it might be one of my favorites. When kids approach this kitchen, they're immediately going to explore as much as they can from the bottom to the top. They'll be squatting, leaning, and reaching up to check out what's going on.
When they're reaching up, we want to make sure they're not getting poked by a sharp edge, so we rounded off the top surface of the apron and leg assembly to make sure kids can freely and comfortably explore.
4. Accessories included
That same detail carries all the way up to the coolest part: the top shelf. This one has a lot to it, but there are a few details that set it apart, and they all work together.
We'll start with the components — from far away, these specimen jars might all look the same, but look closer and each one has a different, interchangeable lid that provides a different experience and use case. They also fit in every slot. We also have two funnels: one with a valve, and the other with detachable bendy tubes.
You'll also notice that the upper shelf curves out, so your funnels exit right into the bin rather than all over the table — no promises with the bendy tubes, though.
