Multi-use Areas

A thoughtfully designed space provides areas for children to move through and find what they are looking for balanced with the functional necessity of safe storage and display. In a space that has to support all of these roles simultaneously, we recommend breaking it up by carving out small, flexible spaces that are semi-protected along with other spaces that invite children to work individually or in small groups.

Designed with Children in Mind

Providing child-sized seating that children can rearrange themselves; small, easy-to-move containers of interesting items to explore like books and hand-held toys within easy reach for a child; a child-sized table with seating; and a purposefully-selected carpet in a space with good lighting will help define this zone as a place where many things can happen.
